About the show
It's the biggest and baddest rock 'n’ roll musical ever! On the way to visit an old college professor, two clean-cut kids run into tire trouble and seek help at the sight of a light down the road. It's coming from the Frankenstein place where Dr. Frank N. Furter is in the midst of one of his maniacal experiments. What follows is a night of fun, frolics and frivolity with that sweet transvestite and his motley crew of misfits. Complete with sass from the audience, cascading toilet paper and an array of other audience participation props, this deliberately kitschy rock 'n' roll sci fi gothic is enormous fun for all.
Auditions
Please bring a headshot and resume, if you have. Auditions will be comprised of singing a prepared rock ‘n’ roll song (32 bars; no longer than 90 seconds) of your choice. It can be from a rock musical, including The Rocky Horror Show. Please bring written sheet music in your own key. An accompanist will be provided. No a capella or karaoke singing. Auditions will also include learning a dance routine. Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes.
Bring your calendar to list any potential conflicts with the rehearsal or performance period. These must be provided prior to casting.
Character Breakdown
Although the story is essentially the same, the stage musical is not a re-creation of the movie and may go in slightly different directions. The show ultimately deals with overt sexuality. All performers must be comfortable with this. Most actors will wear undergarments at some point in the production. There will be no nudity. All roles are available.
Narrator - needs to have a clear speaking voice and excellent articulation. Age range 30s - 50s.
Brad - straight-laced, nerdy, hero type who is sexually awakened by the end of the show. Must be a strong tenor (or high baritone) and a good mover. Will wear undergarments. Age range 20s - 30s.
Janet - strong soprano who's also comfortable with some light belting. Straight-laced, goody-two shoes, heroine type who is sexually awakened by the end of the show. Will wear undergarments. Age range 20s - 30s.
Riff Raff - must have a strong, rock voice. Not your typical servant - an Igor/Phantom type who takes control of everything by the end of the show. Age range 20s - 50.
Magenta – rock belter, strong mover - a maid with a kinky side. Riff Raff's sister. May double as Usherette. Age range 20s - 40s.
Columbia - rock belter who dances extremely well. Tap a plus. A groupie. Age range 18 - 30s.
Frank 'N Furter - high baritone, excellent mover with charismatic stage presence. Must hold the audience in the palm of his hand. A playful diva, sweet and loveable, sexual, funny, control freak. Age range 25 - 40s.
Eddie - rock voice (tenor or high baritone) with a biker look. May be double cast as Dr. Scott - strong actor with a German accent. Age range 20s - 40s.
Rocky - must be a strong singer in great shape and comfortable wearing little clothing. Age range 18 - 30s.
Phantom Males - baritones and tenors needed. Will sing and dance a lot.
Phantom Females - sopranos and altos needed. Will sing and dance a lot.
Production Schedule
Rehearsals: May 22 – July 17, 2019
Performance run commitment: regular run: July 18-August 4, 2019 (14 perfs)
possible extension: August 7-18, 2019 (up to10 add’l perfs)
curtain times: Wednesdays & Thursdays – 7:30pm
Fridays & Saturdays - 8:00pm
Sundays - 4pm
performance call time: 90 minutes prior to curtain, or as otherwise set
Performances will be held at Manoa Valley Theatre. Rehearsals will be held at `Iolani School, 563 Kamoku Street. The rehearsal schedule will be Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 to 9:30 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays as necessary. Cast members will uniformly receive an honorarium to help defray the out-of-pocket expenses associated with volunteerism and participation in this production. This honorarium is not an offer of employment.
Please note: participating in a Manoa Valley Theatre production is a serious commitment and rehearsal attendance is very important. As determined by the director, specific rehearsal schedules have some flexibility depending on known conflicts with cast, holidays, vacations, and work schedules. Actors will only be called to rehearsals when needed. Absolutely no “new” of “forgotten” conflicts will be allowed following initial casting. Please bring your calendar to the auditions.
About the Directors
Rob Duval (guest director) has directed MVT productions of Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, The Who's Tommy, The 39 Steps, Hair, and Gutenberg! The Musical! Some of Rob's directing credits at Diamond Head Theatre include The Fox on the Fairway, The Mousetrap, Leading Ladies, Guys and Dolls, Lend Me a Tenor, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. At Hawaii Theatre, he has directed Joe Moore in Heaven Forbid! and Wrestling Ernest Hemmingway. Rob holds a Bachelor's and a Master's degree both from UCLA.
Jenny Shiroma (guest musical director) studied piano with Julie Jordan at Juilliard. She holds a degree in music education from the University of Hawaii. She has been the pianist as well as musical director for many productions in Hawaii as well as NYC including Renewal and Sex on Trial, which were both performed in the Times Square Arts Center. Her recent MVT production work includes The Full Monty, The Princess and the Iso Peanut and Avenue Q. She received a Po'okela Award for her musical direction of Fun Home.
Katherine L. Jones (guest choreographer) received her dance training at the Rosalie Woodson Dance Academy, where she was also an instructor. In national competitions, her tap, jazz and musical theatre-style choreography has won first and second places in the United States Performing Arts Competition and the Spotlight Dance Competition and is a seven-time Po'okela award recipient. Since 1996, Katherine has performed in and been a guest choreographer for countless community theatre musicals and performances in Hawaii at ACT, MVT, PACK, HPU, UHM, BYU, Iolani School, Saint Andrews Priory School, Sacred Hearts Academy and Saint Louis School. She has choreographed often for MVT, most recently for The Princess and the Iso Peanut.
