A Cage of Fireflies, directed by Dance Aoki, is the inaugural show in the annual series of Pacific-based performances, Aloha Theatre’s Voices from the Ring of Fire Series. The play tells the story of three elderly sisters of the kibei generation: sent as children to be raised in Okinawa, then returned to live and work in Hawai‘i. Two of the sisters confine themselves to their Honolulu apartment where they enact the rituals of daily life and dream of one day returning to Okinawa. The third, charged with running their family’s orchid nursery, embraces the modern world and disrupts her family’s fragile traditions. As long-hidden hopes, resentments and regrets surface, the sisters must confront the nature of their love for each other. A Cage of Fireflies explores the tug-of-war between progress and preservation, the selfish and the selfless. There are three female roles: Yukiko, the eldest sister of the family of three sisters, has a deep longing to return home to Okinawa, age 75-77; Mitsuko, the middle sister of the family, is also matriarch of her own family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, age 70 - 72; and Kimiko, the youngest sister of the family, age 68-70, lives with Yukiko and is dedicated to taking care of her oldest sister. All roles are available.
The cast will initially meet twice, June 17 and 18, and then regular rehearsals will commence June 23. Rehearsals will generally be conducted Sunday afternoons and Monday through Thursday evenings. Cast members must be available for the entire rehearsal schedule with a minimum number of conflicts, and must commit to the entire performance run, August 16 to September 1. The rehearsal and performance schedule is posted online, and will be posted at auditions as well. An optional “A Cage of Fireflies” Boot Camp will be offered Saturday, May 25, from 10:00a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Damron Hall, the building adjacent to the Aloha Theatre. This is a workshop designed to familiarize possible cast members with the play, and prepare them for auditions. For more information, go to AlohaTheatre.com, or call 322-9924.
